The vine Vitis Vinifera has been chosen as the "Medicinal Plant of the Year 2023". The award is given annually by the German association Theophrastus e.V., which deals with natural remedies. According to its own information, it thus puts the spotlight on a plant that combines medicine and pleasure. "The vine has a wealth of medicinal substances in store for us, especially in its fruits and seeds, and even in its leaves," says Konrad Jungnickel, a non-medical practitioner and chairman of the selection committee, explaining the choice.

The plant's most important ingredients include vitamin B6 and folic acid, flavonoids, anthocyanins and tannins. Red vine leaves are recognised in the treatment of venous disorders. Grape seeds and skins have, among other things, antioxidant and thus cell-protective polyphenols. The extracts are offered in the form of teas or capsules for ingestion or for external use as gels and ointments. Whether drinking a glass of wine can also have beneficial effects is not mentioned in the communication.
