Germans were significantly restrained in their wine purchases in the first quarter of 2022. According to the latest figures of the German Wine Institute (DWI), the quantities of wine purchased from January to March 2022 were seven percent below the comparable period in 2020, i.e. before the start of the Covid pandemic. Compared to the first quarter of the exceptional year 2021 with its extremely strong sales growth due to the lockdown at that time, the DWI now reports a minus to 18 percent.

Spending on wine remained constant in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the first three months in 2020. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the value of purchased wines also decreased significantly by 16 percent. DWI managing director Monika Reule justifies the decline with savings by consumers due to the increased cost of living caused by inflation as well as the consequences of the Ukraine war. "As long as the tense economic situation does not improve, it is to be feared that this development will continue," Reule predicts.

The share of households that purchased wines of German origin was back at the pre-pandemic level in the first three months of 2022. Imported wines, on the other hand, attracted slightly fewer buyers. For wine consumers, the taste and the experience they have already had with a wine are the most important factors in buying a wine. The buying behaviour is also significantly influenced by the price and the country or region from which a wine originates.
