Last year, 8.94 million hectolitres of wine and must were produced in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), production was therefore six per cent or 491,800 hectolitres higher than in 2021. 3.5 per cent more wine and must was produced (+ 304,600 hl) compared to the average for the years 2016 to 2021. Two thirds (66%) of the wines produced in 2022 were white wines, while one third (34%) were red wines including rosé wine and Rotling. If the volume is converted into 0.75-litre bottles, around 1.2 billion bottles were bottled in 2022.

The share of Prädikat wine was 21 per cent (1.9 million hectolitres). This share was significantly higher than in 2021, when only 15 per cent of the volume produced was processed into Prädikat wine. In addition, 6.72 million hectolitres of quality wine (75%) and 316,100 hectolitres of the quality grades Wein or Landwein (4%) were produced.

The two largest wine-growing regions, Rheinhessen and Pfalz, produced almost half of Germany's wine volume in 2022. Rheinhessen produced 2.44 million hectolitres and the Palatinate 1.79 million hectolitres. The Baden wine-growing region followed with 1.37 million hectolitres, ahead of the Mosel wine-growing region with 1.28 million hectolitres.

The 2022 wine year was characterised by a long dry period in summer. Young vines or vineyards with low water storage capacity in particular suffered from the lack of rainfall. Where irrigation was not possible, the harvest was noticeably lower. The older vines had fewer problems due to their deep roots. The dry summer reduced fungal infestation, which had a positive effect on the health of the grapes. There were also no late frosts or storms such as hail in 2022. The rainfall shortly before the harvest ultimately led to higher yields than expected.
