The 2022 wine harvest in Germany will be an estimated 8.88 million hectolitres, 4.2 per cent above the volume of 2021 and also slightly above the average for the years 2016 to 2021 (8.72 million hl). This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office. The persistent drought in the summer months apparently did not cause any major damage, as hail, storm and frost did in previous years. More than half (54 per cent) of the expected harvest is accounted for by Germany's largest wine-growing regions. Thus, 2.48 million hectolitres are expected in Rheinhessen and 2.3 million hectolitres in the Palatinate. Rheinhessen will see a decline of more than eight percent compared to 2021, while the Palatinate will see an increase of 4.4 percent.

Baden and Württemberg harvest about a quarter of Germany's wine, the remaining 20 percent is distributed among the other nine wine-growing regions. There are losses in the Mosel with minus 7.6 per cent, but significant increases in the Middle Rhine (+50.1%), Baden (+46.9%) and Saale-Unstrut (+35.3%). At Riesling, the volume decreases by 4.2 per cent or 83,000 hectolitres to 1.9 million hectolitres. At 930,500 hectolitres, the volume of Pinot Noir will be almost 30 per cent higher than in 2021. A slight decline of 2.5 per cent to 765,400 hectolitres is recorded for Dornfelder.

The ratio of white to red grapes is almost exactly two to one.
