The Italian wine industry expects a harvest of around 50.27 million hectolitres this year. These forecasts have been worked out by the Italian oenologists' association Assoenologi in cooperation with the winegrowers' association Unione Italiana Vini (UIV) and the statistics authority Ismea. This means that the expected volume is at last year's level (50.23 million hl) and far above that forecast in midsummer. The record heat and extreme drought have caused less damage to the vines in the Italian regions than previously predicted. 2022 was the driest year since 1800. Compared to the average of the past 30 years, precipitation fell by 46 percent from January to the end of July. However, thanks to the rainfall that fell in almost all regions in August, the worst was averted. Agronomists and oenologists are also more than satisfied with the quality. So far, grapes of good to excellent quality have been harvested. How the quantities and also the quality will develop further depends very much on the weather conditions in the coming weeks.

The ranking of the Italian regions also remains stable. With 11.5 million hectolitres (-3 per cent compared to 2021), Veneto continues to produce more than one fifth of Italian wine. It is followed by Puglia with 10.6 million hectolitres (+3 per cent) and Emilia-Romagna with 7.4 million hectolitres (+4 per cent). While Piedmont (-9 per cent) and Lombardy (-20 per cent) have seen harvest losses, Umbria (+10 per cent), Tuscany (+12 per cent), Sardinia (+15 per cent) and Alto Adige-Trentino (+10 per cent) are expected to see higher volumes.
