After the cooperative associations, the Franconian Winegrowers' Association (FMV) has also announced its withdrawal from the German Winegrowers' Association (DWV). This is reported by the German Press Agency (dpa). "We have never really been heard. We have only disturbed," association president Artur Steinmann told dpa on Wednesday. Among the members, he said, the impression had solidified that the DWV was mainly concerned with the large wine-growing regions such as Rheinhessen. Therefore, the Franconians felt like a "fifth wheel on the wagon". Even a specially appointed "future commission" for a reorientation of the DWV had not brought any concrete results. "Despite the intervention of several member associations, a will for change is not discernible," says a press release of the Franconian Winegrowers' Association. The withdrawal is to take place at the end of the year.

According to a report by Bayerischer Rundfunk, Steinmann also accuses the German Winegrowers' Association of not having sufficiently fulfilled the EU's requirements to date. More than ten years ago, the EU "initiated a turning point for German viticulture" with the mandatory introduction of protected designations of origin (PDO). The Franconian Winegrowers' Association had repeatedly pointed out that the DWV had to face up to this situation. But, according to Steinmann, this has not happened. The Franconian wine-growing region, on the other hand, had already comprehensively implemented the EU requirements.
