In France, requests for crisis distillation far exceed the financial envelope made available by the government. According to data from FranceAgriMer, the National Institute for Agricultural Products, requests were received from 3,457 winegrowers, cooperative wineries and negociants. A total of 4.4 million hectolitres of rosé and red wine are to be distilled. This would require 303 million euros. However, only 160 million euros are currently available.

Above all, far more applications have been made for wines with protected designation of origin than had previously been forecast. Wines from Languedoc including the AOP Côtes du Rhône are in the lead, followed by Bordeaux and the Côtes du Rhône Côteaux Varois. Producers are now demanding at least 40 million euros more to reduce stocks before the upcoming harvest.

While many winegrowers want to take advantage of the crisis distillation, the plan to grub up vineyards in Bordeaux is proving less successful. In the first phase, which has been running since 5 June, 664 applications were submitted for a total of 5,400 hectares. This is slightly more than half (57 %) of the 9,500 hectares planned by the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB). The CIVB finances the clearings with a budget of 19 million euros. Another 37 million euros come from state subsidies.
