The wine-growing region of Ribera del Duero is located in the central north of Spain and has the status of a protected designation of origin, which in Spanish is called "Denominación de Origen" - abbreviated to D.O.. Strict quality standards apply to the wines here. The area extends over a length of 115 kilometres and follows the course of the river Duero, which gives it its name. The famous red wines of the region must consist of at least 75 percent of the noble grape variety Tempranillo.
