The sale of champagne has dropped massively in 2020. The sales figures had decreased by 25 percent compared to 2019, Jean-Marie Barillère, president of the Union des Maisons de Champagne (UMC), said. According to his figures, between 235 and 255 million bottles had been sold in 2020.

The decrease was above all massive in France: There, more than 30 percent less had been sold due to the Corona lockdown. Exports had decreased by only about ten percent. Nevertheless, the association wants to stick to the agreed harvest quantity of 8,000 kg per hectare in 2021.
