Perelada ***, the Spanish winery best known for cava, has set itself the goal of becoming the leading European company in sustainability. Over the next five years, Perelada plans to launch more than 200 initiatives to make sustainability a hallmark of its corporate identity.

The new winery, which will be operational in 2022, has achieved the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold award, which is considered the world's most important certificate for green building. In the building, thermal insulation and natural light are used to reduce energy requirements, water and electricity are used particularly efficiently and geothermal energy is used.

From 2023, Perelada will introduce bottles that are 100 grams lighter and 100 per cent recyclable, which should reduce the CO2 footprint and glass waste. In the medium term, all wines are to be filled in such bottles.

In the vineyards, those responsible want to promote regenerative practices. An important point here is irrigation from pipes laid in the ground, which reach the roots directly and are more efficient. Regenerated water from sewage treatment plants is used for this purpose. Soil health, fertility and biodiversity are stimulated. Herbicide avoidance and greening, which also prevents erosion, are cornerstones here. In general, Perelada also looks for vineyards in higher altitude or wetter areas and studies grape varieties that can better withstand high temperatures and lack of rain.

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Perelada is holding exhibitions and tastings in May at the Centre d'Arts Digitals Barcelona, which will also be open to the public on 6 and 7 May.
