With the "ClimVino" research project of the Burgenland and Slovakian wine industries under the auspices of the Burgenland provincial government, viticulture experts from both countries want to reduce the use of plant protection products by up to 50 percent. In autumn 2019, 23 measuring stations for climate and weather data were put into operation in Austria. With this data, the optimisation of plant protection products in the test regions is now to start for the first time. The stations provide quarter-hourly values on air and leaf moisture, air speed and wind direction. They can be called up online by the winegrowers at any time. By determining the optimal time for spraying, the use of plant protection products can be significantly reduced, those responsible hope.

At the same time, the Federal Office of Viticulture (BAWB) is constantly analysing the soils in the vicinity of the measuring devices. In the coming months, another 25 stations are to be set up in Slovakia. The ClimVino research project is expected to run until October 2022. It is funded by the EU within the framework of the Interreg programme.
