L'Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc, which is responsible for overseeing the Cru Bourgeois classification, is raising its environmental standards. From the next reclassification in 2025, all wineries classified as Crus Bourgeois must demonstrate environmental certification according to the HEV-2 standard (Haute Valeur Environnementale - farm with high environmental value). This obliges them to protect and preserve biodiversity and to use as little pesticide, fertiliser and water as possible. Wineries aiming for the status of Crus Bourgeois Supérieur or Exceptionnel need a level 3 HEV certification, which certifies that the entire agricultural operation meets the set requirements in the areas of biodiversity, plant protection strategy, fertilisation and water management.

Furthermore, from 2022 onwards, all Crus Bourgeois are to use bottles that weigh no more than 390 grams. This means a reduction of the current maximum bottle weight by 22 percent. Currently, 249 châteaux are classified as Crus Bourgeois, 56 of them as Supérieur and 14 as Exceptionnel. The classification is renewed every five years.
