The renowned Barolo winemaker Luciano Sandrone has died of heart failure at the age of 76. He was one of the most important representatives of the appellation and made the name Barolo known all over the world in the 1980s. Already as a young man, Sandrone worked in the cellar of the historical winery Marchesi di Barolo.

In 1977, he bought his first vineyard, Cannubi Boschis, which is now one of the best and most expensive sites in the Langhe. With his wife Mariuccia, he founded the Luciano Sandrone winery at the end of the 1970s and began to age his wine in barriques in his garage. In 1978, he put the first 1,500 bottles of his Barolo on the market. After enthusiastic feedback from the wine world, the Italian-American Marc de Grazia became aware of him and began exporting his wines to the USA. Success was not long in coming, the 1985 Barolo Cannubi Boschis brought the final breakthrough.

Today, the winery has 27 hectares of vineyards and stretches from Barolo to Serralunga, from Castiglione Falletto to Novello and on to Valmaggiore in the Roero region. His brother Luca, his daughter Barbara and his grandsons Alessia and Stefano continue to run the winery in his spirit.
