It is a landmark. The striking cellar tower of the J. Hofstätter winery in the South Tyrolean wine-growing village of Tramin. Just like the wines of the family-run traditional house itself: They unite history, terroir and the vision of something everlasting.

It springs from the mountains of South Tyrol. The Adige - Italy's second longest river - is an important lifeline for the northern Italian province, which has so wonderfully combined the magic of its contrasts to create its very own individuality. The Adige is also an important symbol for the J. Hofstätter winery, whose roots lie in the historic wine-growing village of Tramin. The traditional winery is still the only family-run winery in South Tyrol that owns vineyards on both sides of the river. A unique selling point - one of many. "Hardly any other winery in the region owns vineyards in as many different locations as we do," adds Martin Foradori Hofstätter. Versatility is an important driving force for him, because in addition to the local sites, the winery's vineyards today extend far beyond the borders of South Tyrol.

The hour of birth

The founder of the winery, Josef Hofstätter, already recognised that the location in which the grapes grow is what distinguishes a wine. This important aspect is also reflected at J. Hofstätter in the fact that the respective Cru wines bear the original name of the farm or plot on the label. In Italy, if the label says "Vigna" (meaning vineyard), it means that the wine comes from a precisely defined plot of land. The J. Hofstätter winery was the first in South Tyrol to adopt the "Vigna" classification. Unique plots such as Vigna S. Urbano and Vigna Roccolo for Pinot Noir, Vigna Kolbenhof, Vigna Pirchschrait and Vigna Rechtenthaler Schlossleiten for Gewürztraminer, Vigna Steinraffler for Lagrein and Vigna Oberkerschbaum for Sauvignon Blanc are the godfathers of an exceptional wine profile.

Yesterday, today, tomorrow

Martin Foradori Hofstätter took over the winery from his parents in 1992. Together with his wife Beatrix, he begins an era of modernisation and expansion of the winery.

In 1998 the cellar tower is built, which - reserved and yet defining - shapes the villagescape of Tramin alongside the imposing parish tower. With great vision and entrepreneurial spirit, Martin Foradori Hofstätter increasingly expands the family estate. In 2014, he acquires the Dr. Fischer vineyard in the German Mosel growing region, thus realising his long-cherished dream of having the best Riesling sites at his disposal.

Finally, in 2017, he expanded to Trentino, the home of his ancestors. He buys the Maso Michei estate in the Valle di Ronchi, a fascinating mountain area above the town of Ala.

"Our family has always shaped the estate and is equally shaped by the winery. Our three children are growing up right in the middle of the busy everyday life of the family business. After training, studies and work experience, they want to help shape the future of the winery," says Martin Foradori Hofstätter. "We are looking forward to this joint challenge!"
