A common goal not only unites. In the best case, it also leads to joint success. This is impressively demonstrated in the Trentino producer association Mezzacorona in organic certified wines of the highest quality.

Goethe was already certain: the region around the Trentino wine village of Mezzocorona is "the most beautiful vineyard in Europe". And indeed - the small town that gives its name to Cantina Mezzacorona (with an a instead of an o) is located in one of the most picturesque valleys of the Alps and is worth a visit for the incredible mountain panorama alone. The second incentive is in the glass. Because apart from the landscape, it is the wines of outstanding quality that speak for themselves here. "Our deepest ambition is to preserve the expression of the terroir in our wines," explains Maurizio Maurizi, winemaker at the Mezzacorona cooperative. Thus, it is mainly white grape varieties - above all Pinot Grigio - that mature here in the heart of the Dolomites in the Mediterranean and Alpine-influenced climate into charming wines with a filigree acidity and lively freshness. "Liveliness - that's what Italy stands for. We want to carry this culture of ours out into the whole world," says Maurizio Maurizi.

Connected to the earth

An important basis for this is the constant awareness of the gift that nature has given them. Therefore, sustainable work in the vineyard and also in the wine cellar is the basis that determines the actions of all members of the organically certified cooperative. The vineyards of the producer cooperative cover 2,800 hectares in the Alpine valleys and thus have an exciting spectrum of versatile microclimates. "Our winegrowers know the nature of the soil and the particularities of the different growing areas in our region," explains Maurizi. Every day they are assisted by agronomists in order to preserve the biological fertility of the soil. The result proves this concept right, as Mezzacorona has found the ideal balance between scientific research and technical tools for a good use of the soil and natural resources. The use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers is kept to a minimum by introducing elements used in organic farming. Water is distributed by drip irrigation. You could also call this a kind of "emergency irrigation", because this way the vine only gets the necessary amount of water when it needs it - and without it being wasted. "We make wine because it is ecologically and economically sustainable," the spokesman for the cooperative simply explains all these significant steps.

Conscious and thoughtful

An accompanying element of sustainability is also continuity. At Mezzacorona, this is evident not only in the quality of wines with an unadulterated character, but also in the work. For the success of the winery is due not least to the continuous work of the head oenologist Fabio Toscana, who has been working in the vineyards and in the cellar for over a quarter of a century and is one of the best-known wine experts in the country. The winery is a particular pride of the cooperative, as it is not only ultra-modern, it is also 70 per cent underground. This brings a decisive, ingenious advantage: the energy costs for cooling the wines can be kept low due to the protected storage. Here, too, we have come full circle, because man has designed something that is good for wine and for nature - and winegrowing should be just as well-considered.
