DWS The wine and hospitality industries are facing major challenges. One of these is the shortage of skilled labour. Well-trained wine experts now have the best opportunities - with a qualification at the German Wine and Sommelier School (DWS).

With over 30 years of experience in wine training, the German Wine and Sommelier School (DWS) in Koblenz is one of Germany's leading centres for further education, combining its traditional knowledge with the latest developments and setting standards as a trendsetter and training centre. Every year, around 600 graduates graduate from the DWS as wine experts, well prepared and equipped with an IHK certificate or the coveted title of public law qualification as a certified sommelier or certified sommelière.

The school not only offers sound knowledge and in-depth expertise, but also an inspiring network for wine lovers and professionals. Together with Petra Treis, deputy director of the school, we dive into the specialities and visions of the DWS. Find out how the passion for wine is shared and what makes the DWS the original in sommelier training!

Petra Treis

Ms Treis, what characterises the German Wine and Sommelier School?

Petra Treis: The German Wine and Sommelier School is a leading educational institution for anyone who wants to learn about wine professionally and passionately. Our school combines traditional knowledge with state-of-the-art teaching methods. We are not just a school, but a network that lives and passes on the culture of wine. Our aim is for our graduates not only to acquire excellent specialised knowledge, but also to be optimally prepared for their professional and academic challenges. We stand for future-orientated education that combines innovative learning methods and proven content.

What is the diversity of your courses and the study locations you offer?

Petra Treis: We offer a wide range of courses, from one-day seminars for wine lovers to advanced certifications for prospective certified sommeliers, among others. For those who want to take their skills to the highest level, the Certified Master Sommelier IHK and the international WSET® Level 4 Diploma in Wines are two of the highest qualifications for wine professionals. Each of our eleven study locations in Germany is unique, but all share the same philosophy and quality standards. Whether in historic wine regions or urban centres such as Berlin or Hamburg, our study locations range from the north to the south of Germany. In addition to our regular courses, we also offer customised in-house training for companies. These special programmes enable companies to optimally train their employees with our support. Our flexible and practical approach helps companies to support and develop their teams in a targeted manner.

What is the latest news from your school? What new developments and upcoming training programmes are there?

Petra Treis: We are determined and committed to continuously developing our courses and responding to the latest trends and developments in the world of wine. The new IHK legislation requires a reform of the sommelier training programme. In response, our school, as a proven pioneer, offers a new concept and sets new standards in training. Our participants benefit from our innovative approach. We are also proud to be launching our brand new "Masterclass Sustainability Specialist Sommelier (IHK) Sustainability" certificate course in autumn 2024. Sustainability is not just a trend, but a deeply rooted movement. In this course, participants will receive intensive training on how to make the wine industry more sustainable, which is of immense importance both ethically and ecologically.

Finally, Mrs Treis, what advice would you give to someone who is considering entering the world of wine?

Petra Tre is: Entering the world of wine takes a little courage, but the rewards are immeasurable. As Marie Curie once said: "You need fear nothing in life, you just have to understand everything." At the German Wine and Sommelier School, we offer a variety of courses specifically designed to give beginners the best possible start and to support ambitious learners and guide them on their path to outstanding professional and personal success. Start your personal journey with us, the DWS - experience the boundless diversity of the international wine world and let yourself be infected by our passion!
