Gigondas is the home of powerful to mighty, often fruit-rich, very dense and concentrated red wines that can be among the weightiest in the entire wine world. The best examples, however, are smoother, finer and more complex than their neighbours from Vacqueyras, without achieving the apparent lightness or the enormous aromatic complexity of some of the great Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Nevertheless, they have long since shed their former reputation as "Châteauneuf for the poor". Today, the top producers of the region produce completely independent wines with a strong character in mainly two styles. Some focus on power and opulence thanks to highly ripe fruit, sometimes tending towards overripe, and not infrequently ageing in new small wooden barrels. The most powerful examples of this genre usually come from the hot plain to the west of the village.
