Silvaner copes much better with drought than many other grape varieties. This is proven by the 2022 vintage after tasting over 300 wines: While even the best 22 Riesling wines rarely have the tension, depth and structure of great vintages, the Silvaner wines show impressive class.

Time and again, we notice that Silvaner copes better with the consequences of climate change than some other grape varieties. In particular, it seems to be much less affected by drought than Riesling, for example. This is once again evident in the 2022 vintage: while the Rieslings, especially at the top end of the quality spectrum, rarely have the tension, depth and structure that we are used to from good vintages, the Silvaner wines show impressive class.

Our selection of dry 2022 Silvaner wines presented here alone contains 54 wines with ratings of 89 points and above, more than ever before at this point in time, when some of the top vintages are not even on the market yet. It is noticeable that producers have also adapted to the changed conditions. Whereas we used to see many rather heavy wines with noticeably high alcohol levels in warm vintages, these are now far outnumbered. A single wine with 14 per cent alcohol by volume was presented to us from Germany, and even that still has some finesse. At the lower end of the alcohol scale, the best dry Silvaner wines in 2022 even start at 10%, and the vast majority of all wines tasted are far from powerful or heavy. Elegance and finesse now clearly dominate, even under conditions that would hardly have been considered possible a decade ago. At the same time, the variety of styles is probably greater than ever before.

It is therefore fair to say that drinking Silvaner has hardly ever been so much fun. If you haven't tried it yet: Now is not the worst time to start!

We have tasted well over 300 Silvaner wines this year, the best of which we present here. In addition to the top German wines, the list also includes some representatives from South Tyrol. We have set up a separate section for the particularly inexpensive wines up to 12 euros, in which you will find some Silvaners whose price performance can hardly be beaten. You will find links to all the wines tasted at the end of each list.
