The two large Alsatian co-operative wineries Bestheim and Wolfberger want to merge. This was announced in a press release. The aim is to merge the two companies by 2025. The members of the wineries still have to formally approve the merger.

Wolfberger was founded in 1902 and is a heavyweight in Alsace with a turnover of 60 million euros and 300 members. Bestheim sold more than twelve million bottles last year, six million of which were crémant. The winery comprises 325 winegrowers. The merger of the two co-operatives would create a wine giant in Alsace with 625 winegrowers and 2650 hectares of vineyards and unite the Wolfberger, Bestheim, Willm and Lucien Albrecht brands.

"Bestheim and Wolfberger want to combine the expertise and strengths of their teams. Together, we want to make the important and essential investments that are necessary to be fit for the future," said Hervé Schwendenmann, President of Wolfberger. Pierre-Olivier Baffrey, President of Bestheim, added: "We want to advance an ambitious economic, ecological and social project and make Alsatian wines more attractive."
