In the Burgundian appellation of Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits, a biodiversity project is being worked on for the first time. The local winegrowers' association, the municipal administration and the region's chamber of agriculture had decided in spring 2021 to record the biodiversity in the appellation's 150 hectares of vineyards. After a detailed survey of the areas around the village, the first results are now available: While the forested hilltops offer more habitats for birds, the biodiversity in the vineyards below is not very high. This is now to be improved by planting existing green areas with suitable hedges and trees. Work is to be done with the local authority, which is responsible for mowing the areas, on appropriate landscaping as well as on repairing the dry stone walls.

"The idea was to work at village level, because in a fragmented wine region like Burgundy, every measure has an impact on the neighbours. Moreover, at this level we can obtain representative results that can be used for other appellations," explained Lise-Marie Lalès, advisor at the Côte-d'Or Chamber of Agriculture.
