The Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) has held out the prospect of price increases for wines of up to 30 per cent. As managing director Theresa Olkus told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) at the preview of "Grosse Gewächse“ at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden, the wineries are facing the challenge that the costs for production and packaging, for example, have risen extremely. Therefore, the prices of VDP wines would have to be raised by about 30 per cent.

"We have seen in the past two years that people tend to drink less wine, but more valuable wine," Olkus explained. She expects the Grosses Gewächs (GG) labelled single vineyards to remain in strong demand despite higher inflation. It remains to be seen how sales of the estate and local wines, which are currently offered from ten euros, will develop. The prices of the currently presented GG wines range from 40 to 120 euros per bottle.
