Global wine consumption will grow by only seven percent over the next twenty years. In the past two decades, on the other hand, it had risen by 27 percent. This is the result of a market analysis by the Italian wine association Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), which was presented in Rome.

"The wine-consuming world will no longer base its growth on quantity, but on the experience expressed in the bottle: from taste to experience, from the concept of sustainability to lifestyle. The wine industry needs to strengthen its premium offerings, but also rationalise them. In many cases, producers' portfolios are no longer aligned with rapidly changing demand. In the future, it will be particularly important to pick up the young generation," said Lamberto Frescobaldi, President of the UIV.

According to the UIV, more than 37 billion bottles of wine are currently consumed worldwide each year, of which eight countries account for more than half: USA (14%), followed by France (10%), Italy and Germany (7% each), China (6%), UK (5%), Canada (2%) and Japan (1%). The UIV study analyses trends based on the progressive ageing of consumers. Per capita consumption in the main producing countries will continue to decline. A positive development is only expected for the USA (+9.3 million hectolitres), China (+4.1 million) and Canada (+1.1 million).
