A new SWR documentary entitled "Revolution in the Vineyard - How the Climate is Changing the Wine World" focuses on the consequences of climate change for German viticulture. Heat stress, drought, torrential rain and pests are presenting many wineries with ever greater problems here too. At the same time, viticulture produces greenhouse gases and consumes valuable resources. Vintners from Germany's wine-growing regions have their say. For example, organic winegrower Matthias Höfflin from Bötzingen in the Kaiserstuhl region, who has to plant his vines at ever higher altitudes. In his "hot Kessellagen", on the other hand, he plants grape varieties from southern regions: Merlot and Syrah. Also portrayed is vintner Eva Vollmer from Rheinhessen, who has launched the "Zukunftsweine" initiative. She advocates Piwi wines, which are intended to defy climate change and protect the environment.
The 45-minute film was broadcast on SWR on 12 July and is available in the ARD media library and on Youtube. .
