Wine manager Ezio Rivella has died in Rome at the age of 90. Born in Castagnole Lanze (Asti) in 1933, he began his career as an oenologist in various winery cooperatives in Piedmont. His entrepreneurial foresight soon led him to take on larger tasks. At the end of the 1970s, the Italian-American Mariani family entrusted him with the management of the Castello Banfi winery in Montalcino. In this role, he succeeded in leading Brunello di Montalcino to international success and turning it into a global brand. In his long career, he has held various offices, including that of President of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino.

He was also President of the Italian winegrowers' association Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), the National Committee for DOC wines, the Italian and International Association of Oenologists and Vice President of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Paris.

Ezio Rivella is considered one of Italy's most important wine personalities and shaped the country's modern oenology. He was above all a key figure for the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, but was also jointly responsible for the great success of Italian wines abroad.
