The total value of German wine exports rose by four per cent to 384 million euros in 2023. Although the volume fell by two per cent to 1.15 million hectolitres, this is a new record. This is due to the 20 cent increase in the average price to 3.35 euros per litre.

There was a striking increase in exports to Sweden, where 80,000 hectolitres more wine was sent than in 2022, an increase of 22 per cent. The value rose by 29 per cent to 20 million euros. German wines achieved the second-highest sales in the overall white wine segment for the first time and are in third place in terms of sales figures. This was announced by the Swedish alcohol monopoly Systembolaget. Three per cent more wines were exported to Finland and sales increased by nine per cent.

In the two most important export markets, the USA and Norway, average prices rose by 21 and 28 cents to 4.53 and 4.68 euros per litre respectively. However, volumes fell by seven per cent in the USA and two per cent in Norway. In the third most important market, the Netherlands, the value even increased by ten per cent with sales remaining the same. In fourth place for the first time was Poland with a constant volume of 109,000 hectolitres and an export value of 26 million euros, which represents an increase of 16 per cent. Within ten years, the volume of wine exports to Poland has tripled and the value quadrupled. These four countries - the USA, Norway, the Netherlands and Poland - together accounted for 41 per cent of the total value and volume of German wine exports in 2023.
