The Italian winery Lunardelli from Jesolo has announced it will discontinue the wine line next year following renewed outrage across Europe over its labels with Hitler motifs. Winemaker Andrea Lunardelli told the online magazine Vice that he would end the series in 2023, when he takes over responsibility of the winery from his father. He said he was "fed up" with the controversy his business had caused over the years. He does not like the historical series anyway. It contains 35 photos of Hitler and other Nazi greats, plus others of Mussolini, Stalin and Franco, for example.

"Unfortunately, Hitler is the most requested label from the series - especially by Germans, but also by many British, Scandinavians, French and Russians," the winemaker explained, "but no Italian wants Hitler." According to media reports, wines from the "historical series" are available in more than 50 shops throughout Italy. There, the sale of products with fascist symbols is largely legal. Lunardelli started selling bottles with Hitler motifs as early as 1995.

Last week they again came under worldwide criticism in the media as well as on social media. The Austrian doctor Dagmar Millesi had reported that she had observed people travelling to the holiday resort of Jesolo near Venice just to buy the bottles in a local supermarket. Many users of Facebook and Twitter, as well as Jewish organisations, had then strongly condemned the label depictions.
