Vins du Val de Loire

The Interprofessional Association of the Loire, InterLoire, wants to emphasise red wine in the future. Analyses commissioned by the association in 2022 revealed that red wines from the French wine-growing region have a much greater market potential than white, rosé and sparkling wines. According to the market analysis, 7.8 million customers could be added to the current 7.3 million French buyers of Loire red wines. According to Sophie Talbot, Director General of InterLoire, red wines from the region with their freshness, softness and elegant tannins have a unique selling point in the face of tough competition.

The region is thus bucking the global downward trend, which mainly affects heavy and tannin-rich red wines: supply and demand for red wine have fallen massively over the past 20 years. According to OIV data, global production volumes fell by 25 per cent between 2004 and 2021, and by as much as 50 per cent in France. The share of red wine in global wine production has fallen from 48 per cent to 43 per cent since the beginning of the century.
