The sommelier at wineBank in Hamburg, Katahrina Iglesias, is the winner of the Sommelier Cup 2024, organised by the German Wine Institute (DWI). Second place went to sommelier and winemaker Lukas Sermann from Altenahr (Ahr) and third place to sommelier Maike Witfang from the Atrium Hotel in Mainz. The competition took place there from 21 to 22 January.

28 professionals from top and starred restaurants, the wine industry, the specialised wine trade and students from the hotel and viticulture sectors took part in the competition. They had to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of viticulture, the wine market and wine law and correctly categorise 45 German wines - including Piwis, matured and noble sweet wines - according to origin, ageing style and vintage.

On the second day, the five finalists had to correctly recognise two hidden wines and demonstrate their service skills to the expert jury. A quiz on curious facts from the world of wine called for a confident demeanour and spontaneity. The German Wine Queen Eva Brockmann hosted the final and presented the three winners with cash prizes of 1,500 euros, 1,000 euros and 750 euros.
