Around 43.2 million hectolitres of wine were stored in Italian wineries as at 31 October 2023. This is roughly equivalent to the country's entire wine harvest. The data was published in the "Report Cantina Italia" by the Central Supervisory Authority for the Protection of Quality and the Fight against Fraud in the Food and Agricultural Sector (ICQRF). DOC/DOCG wines account for over half of the stocks, 26.4 per cent are IGT wines and the rest are simple wines with no indication of origin. The majority come from northern Italian regions, with Veneto leading the way at 24.5 per cent. The designations of origin with the highest stocks are Prosecco DOC (3.9 million hectolitres), IGT Puglia (1.9 million hectolitres), IGT Toscana (1.2 million hectolitres), IGP Salento (1.2 million hectolitres), DOC Sicilia (1.2 million hectolitres), Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (1.2 million hectolitres) and DOC delle Venezie (1.1 million hectolitres).
