Germans are drinking significantly less sparkling wine than ten years ago. According to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 267.8 million litres of sparkling wine, prosecco and champagne were consumed last year. This corresponds to a per capita consumption of 38 glasses of 0.1 litres or five bottles for every person over the age of 16. Ten years ago, consumption was 49 glasses or 6.6 bottles. This represents a decrease of 21 per cent. Destatis has not determined the reasons for this.

Destatis analysed the revenue from the sparkling wine tax for these figures. In 2022, this amounted to 352 million euros and thus 0.04 per cent of total federal, state and municipal tax revenue. The sparkling wine tax was introduced in 1902 to finance the imperial navy.
