The committee for wines from protected geographical indications in France wants to tighten the rules for dealcoholised wines if they continue to bear a designation of origin. This was stated by Eric Paul, chairman of the national committee for PGI wines at the French National Institute for Origin and Quality (INAO). He makes clear demands: The blending of partially dealcoholised wines with conventional wines should be permitted in order to reduce the alcohol content. In addition, the water and flavourings added to partially de-alcoholised wines should only be taken from the de-alcoholised quantity. The committee also wants to completely ban the addition of glycerine and sucrose.

The French wine industry is currently looking for ways out of the crisis and is also focusing on partially and de-alcoholised wines. "It could be an opportunity to develop products with a lower alcohol content and gain market share without losing regional roots," said Eric Paul.

The specific oenological processes for these products will soon also be discussed within the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). The consultations should lead to changes in European regulations.
