According to a British study, one in three women in the wine industry is harassed at work. This is confirmed by figures of the Proof Insight market research institute. The study was commissioned by the online platform Curious Vines, which brings together women in the wine industry. Almost half (44 %) of the women have even considered leaving the industry because of sexism. Seventy-eight per cent of respondents said sexism and gender discrimination or bias were problems that needed to be addressed. More than one in three women in the wine industry have been harassed at work, and this problem disproportionately affects hospitality workers.

The lack of women in management positions and discriminatory pay and working conditions were also among the main problems mentioned by women participating in the survey. More than three quarters (76%) felt that women are under-represented in management positions and half (54%) believe that discriminatory pay and working conditions are a problem in the UK wine industry.

Queena Wong, founder of Curious Vines, said at a presentation of the study, "As a mother of a young adult daughter, it really hit me that 50 per cent of women aged 18 to 34 have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. This needs to be addressed immediately."

A total of 726 people were surveyed. The majority were women aged 25 to 44. Almost half of the survey participants have been in the industry for ten years or more.
