The extreme drought and high temperatures in the past year have led to considerable harvest losses for cork oaks. The producing countries in the Mediterranean region are talking about a decline of 30 per cent compared to 2021. As a result, the cork industry is having major problems procuring raw materials. According to the Italian wine association Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), price increases for natural corks are not only due to this but also to other economic factors like the significantly increased energy prices. All major producers in Italy, Portugal and Spain are affected by this.
