Wines from Burgundy set a new export record in 2022. The turnover of 1.5 billion euros means an increase of almost 13 percent compared to 2021, although the volume was 12 percent lower at 92 million bottles. The 2021 harvest was 32.5 per cent lower than the five-year average due to bad weather and hail.

The largest export market was the USA with 21 per cent volume and 19 per cent sales, followed by the UK (15 and 16 per cent), Canada (9 and 5 per cent), Japan (8 and 9 per cent) and Belgium (7 and 4 per cent). Germany is in 9th place with 3 per cent each, with around 2.9 million bottles worth 39 million euros imported. Turnover here rose by 17.6 per cent despite a 6.4 per cent decrease in volume.

The biggest differences between volume and turnover were shown by (in order of difference) the United Arab Emirates (+46.5 volume and +158.5 per cent turnover), the Czech Republic (-27.3 and +22.6 per cent), South Korea (-15.6 and +19.4 per cent), Mexico (+19.7 and +54.1 per cent), the United Kingdom (-18 and +15 per cent) and China (-8 and +40.5 per cent).

Although the 2022 harvest has replenished stocks to some extent, the high demand for Burgundy is likely to keep prices high.
