The Syndicat Général des Vignerons de Champagne has decided by a large majority that the capsule should remain obligatory on Champagne bottles. It is part of the image of the appellation, said Maxime Toubart, president of the association. It is an important distinguishing feature for Champagne and it is therefore important to make its use mandatory. The capsule can be made of aluminium, plastic or paper.

Following the vote, the Comité Champagne sent out a notification that the mandatory use of the capsule should be included in the Champagne appellation's specifications. The association has already informed the Institut National d'Origine et Qualité (INAO) of its decision. This means that there will be no transitional or phasing-out periods for those who have opted to label their Champagne bottles without a capsule.

According to EU Regulation 2023/1606, sparkling wines may be sold without foil around the neck of the bottle in the EU from the end of August 2023.
