Fattoria Le Pupille shows in the best possible way how awareness of provenance can conquer the world in liquid form: The flagship winery of the Maremma focuses on terroir-driven wines that combine international awareness with Italian temperament.It first needs the seed to take root in the soil. Only then can anything grow, blossom and ultimately grow into a long-lived, healthy plant. It is the same with a whole vineyard that grows from many individual plants. Sometimes the seed is the human being himself. The one who takes the first step. In the case of Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the picturesque Maremma landscape, this "seed" was once Alfredo Gentili. But it was Elisabetta Geppetti, who took over these beginnings in 1985 and filled them with passion, determination, curiosity and commitment, who succeeded in creating a winery that today not only belongs to the elite of Tuscany, but also to the vinophile pioneers of the region. The Fattoria is one of the founders of the famous Morellino di Scansano appellation.
Risen from the ruins: Fattoria Le Pupille is wonderful proof that you should never give up - and that the beauty of nature will show you the way. For the location of the winery could not be more special and predestined for growing wine. Here, in the southern part of Tuscany, the Tyrrhenian Sea laps the coast and ensures that cooling winds balance out the hot summers. The gentle hills overlooking Monte Amiata provide shelter for the vines. When Elisabetta Geppetti began running what was once a small family business here almost 40 years ago and brought her wines to life, she didn't just become a winemaker. She also became an ambassador for this magnificent stretch of land, with which she has been connected since childhood. Today, the winery covers 450 hectares, 85 of which are planted with vines, 20 with olive trees and 18 with noble hazelnut trees. A proud 450,000 bottles of characterful grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are produced at Le Pupille every year. And despite this dimension, then as now, the awareness of quality and authenticity is paramount. Because Elisabetta owes this to her wines as a producer, but also as the first president of the Consorzio di Tutela del Morellino di Scansano. Over the years, she has become the flag bearer of the Maremma worldwide and is proud of her nickname "Lady of Morellino".
In the meantime, besides Elisabetta, two of her five children - Clara and Ettore - run the company. They, too, are full of energy and determined to dedicate themselves to new dreams and projects that need to be realised. True to the family's motto of "love for the land, passion for wine", the three of them have made every effort to produce wines that convey the terroir of their origins to the world, and are also constantly questioning and researching every step of their work in order to act even more sustainably and with the greatest possible respect for the environment. Because only in this way is it possible to live the fascination of wine for as long as possible: "The unpredictability of each vintage is what makes it special. It simply never gets boring," the three agree. If, on top of that, the balance of nature in the vineyard is right and the wisdom of man in the cellar allows the harvest to mature into wine in the best possible form, they are all in their element.
