Devonet FlascheThe "Italian around the corner" is not only to be found here in Switzerland, but also in faraway South Africa, in Cape Town for example. Such small, family-run restaurants are an alternative to the fast-food joints that are springing up like mushrooms. There are districts (especially in shopping and tourist centres) where, apart from a few "upmarket" restaurants, only McDonalds and Co. can be found. An abomination for those tourists who don't want to eat and drink but who want to eat and drink even when they are on the road and don't always want to eat "posh". In such small establishments, in addition to good (and often special) food, there are also wines that are a pleasure to drink. Not the big names, but rather wines for everyday life, for the small but enjoyable menu - even if it's just an individually made pizza (like at the Italian restaurant). Above all, however, it is wines of the country, not Italians at the Italian, French at the French or Spaniards at the Spanish (as is the case here). This is certainly a question of price, as imported wines are arguably a lot more expensive and probably don't suit the clientele you'll find here. But it is also a question of insight - maybe even conviction, - that local wines are not only cheaper but also more suitable, often far better, little discoveries, especially for tourists who can meet the wine country South Africa here.Clos Malverne

In our case, it was - as you can see my preference for the independent - again a Pinotage, this time an assemblage with Merlot. I don't have any information about the ratio of the two grape varieties, but the Pinotage clearly predominates. This is a good thing, as it maintains the slightly smoky Pinotage character. It is not softened - internationalized, so to speak - by the more pleasing Merlot. This also fits the "little Italian", because there nothing is big, neither the food, nor the wine, but very, very good. And - above all - food and drink come to the table with an unbelievable friendliness and cordiality that are so stimulating that you eat and drink with the greatest pleasure and are convinced that you have not encountered the everyday, but something special.
