History is rarely written in a moment. The VDP winery Prinz Salm (Nahe) shows this in a special way: In the 32nd generation, winegrowing is lived here with pride, love and sustainability. And with a charming commitment to the grape variety Riesling.

When the good Lord has his hands in the game, the path you walk can only be a good one. Especially when it has already been developed so trustingly and sustainably by 31 generations before you and consolidated with much thought, foresight and heart and soul. Prince Felix and Princess Victoria zu Salm-Salm are on this path - with their own, equally deliberate steps. For since 2017, they have been running the family winery in the Nahe wine village of Wallhausen in what is now the 32nd generation - making Prinz Salm Germany's oldest family-owned winery. "In every generation, my family has dealt with current challenges and has always been at the spearhead of new developments," says Felix Prinz zu Salm-Salm, to whom the good Lord gave a sign that he should follow the wine-producing family tradition.

Let the facts speak for themselves

800 years of history, more than 30 generations, 19 hectares of vineyards and a very clear commitment to living sustainability in viticulture, which was once again clearly manifested in 2018 with the Fair'n' Green certification: The winery Prinz Salm, which cultivates vineyards in the climatically rather cool growing region of Nahe as well as in Bingen in Rheinhessen, not only focuses on the grape varieties Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. But also on bringing them ecologically and handmade into the bottle. "Sustainability runs through our veins," says Felix Prinz zu Salm-Salm simply, making it clear that his ancestors also had the harmonious interplay with nature firmly in mind for a long time. As a result, it was the logical consequence to set the course for organic viticulture from 1988 onwards. "The soils are our most valuable asset and we want to pass them on to the next generation in a better way," says Felix Prinz zu Salm-Salm. For he is not only aware of his heritage, but also of the future. He is equally clear: "The quality of the wines comes from the vineyard." And it is these vineyards with top sites such as Johannisberg and Felseneck in Wallhausen, Ritterhöhle in Dalberg as well as Scharlachberg in Bingen - in addition to the people who work on them - that distinguish the VDP winery.

Perfection in maturation

The precious grapes, which ripen here during the wine year on green slate, red slate and quartzite, are carefully, positively and meticulously accompanied by cellar master Masato Nagasawa and his team in an equally natural process of wine-making. "That's what excites me about winemaking - that it is a completely natural development," says the winery owner. But there is always movement in this harmonious flow. Because the prince's motto is: "Always go against the current to the source. Standstill? That is a foreign word at the winery. Because just as every single vintage tells the story of its creation in a special way, the winemaking couple is also constantly adding new chapters to the centuries-long history. "In the near future, we will be growing Chardonnay," the landlord says happily. And site sparkling wines on the lees are soon to be added to the charming assortment. With which he skilfully proves that writing history is never over.
