Roberto Anselmi knows how to elicit the finest aromas from the Garganega grape like hardly any other winemaker. It characterises his white wines with rich, pure and complex aromas. The story of a dreamer who goes his way with very special wines.

People usually dream with a certain expectation. In the hope that fulfilment will fall into their laps, as it were, without any action on their part. Roberto Anselmi, on the other hand, fulfilled his dream himself: through a vision, his belief in it. And hard work. "I have always dreamed of owning a high-quality winery to produce my own wine. Because I have always had a romantic vision of our land. To create values, feelings, the right traditions and ways of life with the land and for the land. And that's how I started," says the Italian winemaker, who talks about his career with an ease that also resonates in his wines. Yet it was a long road. In 1975, after his studies, he returned to his father's winery to "start my life's work". His grandfather had been an excellent winemaker. "But unfortunately, the economic crisis related to the Second World War forced him to sell all his vineyards." Roberto's father also remained faithful to winemaking - but only with a large winery for bottling and selling bought-in wines, without land or vineyards of his own. This was not the path the ambitious young Anselmi wanted to pursue: "I always dreamed of buying back my grandfather's vineyards and land dedicated to winemaking."

Creating a new legacy

He closed his father's company, initially leased the land of his dreams - and later bought it: land in the hills of the Soave wine region that had always been destined for white wine production. His dream took on realistic traits and became what is now a 70-hectare wonderful wine adventure: the high planting density of vines in the vineyards per hectare, the selection of less productive and aromatic clones of the locally important grape variety Garganega, the reduction of the number of grapes per plant, careful vinification, cold maceration, low-temperature fermentation and a long maturation period have led to the fact that Anselmi wines today stand for exceptional quality. Some even say that Roberto Anselmi's white wines are "among the most beautiful and racy" in all of Italy. "I worked hard to give the Soave region a good reputation on the world markets," says the winemaker. However, he succeeded only partially. When, at the end of the 1990s, he demanded radical changes in viticulture in the entire Soave region because he believed that the quality of his homeland was even better due to the natural conditions, the quality specifications for the grapes were only marginally adjusted to his ideas. "Maybe I wasn't understood, but I couldn't accept any compromises," Anselmi says, looking back at that time.

No half measures

And as it is, when it comes to a big dream, you have to stay true to it. Compromises are out of place: "That's why I gave up the name Soave and named my wines after my vineyards Capitel Foscarino - made of volcanic tuff - and Capitel Croce - made of limestone." A commitment to origins born of a thought: "Quality is indeed the fruit of man's will and work, but it cannot do without science, which allows us to recognise the true values of tradition." Thanks to this philosophy, his aromatic, fruity wines are born, characterised by complexity, body and longevity.
