The great art with Silvaner, especially in hot years, is to keep the alcohol in check and still achieve wines with expression, complexity and depth. This was often, but not always, achieved in 2018. It is noticeable that the nominally smaller wines are often hardly inferior to the top wines, sometimes even surpassing them in terms of finesse and elegance - and thus drinking pleasure. Thus, the selection at the top end of our selection is noticeably smaller this year than last year. Just below and far into the middle, however, Silvaner lovers can expect a long list of very convincing wines at often very consumer-friendly prices.
A number of producers are now launching their top wines on the market a year late. In principle, we welcome this step, since it is precisely the top quality wines that are not made to be enjoyed in their early youth. However, not all of the 2017 wines released this year convinced us as much as we would have expected. Although we tasted the wines several times on different days, as always, we are unsure whether we have not caught them in a completely unwell phase. We will therefore taste many of them again in due course.
