As early as 2002, the Weinviertel was the first Austrian wine region to introduce a DAC, which to this day applies exclusively to Grüner Veltliner. The range of DAC wines is broad, from light, drinkable, often extremely inexpensive everyday wines to much more sophisticated, complex Veltliners to heavy, sometimes almost too powerful prestige reserves. Nevertheless, this Veltliner diversity covers only a small part of what there is to discover in the Weinviertel today, and in most cases the most exciting wines today are bottled without the DAC seal.

It's no wonder: the area is so disparate and offers such a variety of different soils, sites and microclimates that the idea of representing the whole zone by a DAC for a single grape variety that is as uniform as possible seems almost contradictory. Even the majority of the best Veltliners of the Weinviertel today no longer bear a DAC seal, because especially the most exciting examples rarely fit into the corset. For the many other varieties that are cultivated here with more and more success, this already applies by definition.

So we find ourselves in the paradoxical situation that some of the region's leading producers are not even associated with the Weinviertel because they do not offer a single DAC wine. This cements the Weinviertel's reputation for being primarily responsible for uncomplicated, drinkable Veltliners for every day, while the more "serious" wines are more likely to be found in other parts of Lower Austria, according to many wine lovers. But anyone who thinks this way is missing out on some of Austria's most interesting wines and winemakers. Therefore, one can only advise all wine lovers to take a closer look at the area: buy the DAC-Veltliners, among which there are wonderful wines in all weight classes, but don't forget all the other inspiring wines and winemakers!

You can find the best wines from our Weinviertel tastings here and as always as a handy PDF. For technical reasons we can only link directly to the DAC wines, because all other wines are only marketed under the general designation of origin "Niederösterreich". To all producers of the area and their wines go here.
