Contemporary winemaking meets high-quality terroir: the Château Mukhrani winery takes you into a world full of elegance, attentiveness and tradition - and thus shows a very special piece of Georgian wine history. A history that stands for great wines.

History is a journey into the past that shows us where everything began. It shows us how everything is connected. It builds on each other. It connects the then with the now. The history of the Georgian winery Château Mukhrani is a wonderful example of how skilfully these two worlds combine. If you look back to the 16th century, you can see that the roots of the Princes of Mukhrani lie in the Bagrationi dynasty, one of the oldest noble families in the world. It so happened that in 1512 King David of Kartli gave the Mukhrani estate to his brother Bagrat. Exactly 300 years later, Ivane Mukhranbatoni was born into this family. As a young man, he initially decided on a military career. With success: he was even appointed military governor of West Georgia. But he was also interested in agriculture. During a trip to France, which took him to the famous wine-growing regions of Burgundy and Champagne, he learned more about the art of winemaking - and decided to put his new knowledge into practice on the family's home estate. This was an obvious choice, as wine grapes of exceptional quality have been growing for many millennia in Georgine's temperate climate, with its location between the Black Sea and the Caucasus. Ivane Mukhranbatoni added an amazing chapter to this history with the first vintage in 1878. One that has stood for wines of the highest quality ever since.

Tradition meets modernity

To this day, it is pride in its own resources that is the strength of the Château Mukhrani winery. Wines that once achieved world fame within a very short time and even brought Château Mukhrani to the Tsar's palace in Russia on the list of exclusive purveyors to the court. These chapters at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century stand for great fame and excellence - and at Château Mukhrani, they have not remained in the past. For this pride is evident above all in the commitment to its own heritage: on the 102 hectares of fertile soils that comprise the winery and are farmed organically, predominantly autochthonous grape varieties ripen, such as the white grapes Goruli Mtsvane and Rkatsiteli, as well as the red Saperavi and Tavkveri, rare Kartlian grape varieties that Château Mukhrani has brought back to life. Pride is also evident in the awareness of high quality, which must continue to be lived up to. Thus, work in the vineyard is mindful and close to nature, and the grapes are harvested gently. "Our vineyards are the key to making our wines exquisite and unique," head oenologist Patrick Honnef is certain. With this in mind, Château Mukhrani combines traditional viticulture with a contemporary wine cellar and modern technology.

Great history, great future

The circle seems to have come full circle, because Patrick Honnef, like Ivane Mukhranbatoni in his day, also learned his trade in France, albeit in Bordeaux. Perhaps it is this parallel that enables him to create balanced wines full of elegance and intensity. Perhaps it is also the awareness of that very history and the splendour of yesteryear that the passionate current owners of Château Mukhrani continue to live. For it is their endeavour to create wines that are inimitable and expressive. Wines that have great ageing potential. Wines that are somehow royal.
