Austria's vintners prove year after year that they belong to the world's top. International critics like Rene Gabriel, David Schildknecht for Robert Parker's "WineAdvocate" or Bruce Sanderson for "WineSpectator" have been awarding top ratings for Austrian wines for a long time. And it is not easy to compete with the venerable Burgundies, Bordeaux or Supertuscans. Nevertheless, I found 46 Austrian wines with 95-100 points at WineSpectator and even 84 wines with a higher rating than 95/100 at Robert Parker's WineAdvocate! This indicates that the international top has been reached a long time ago! Unfortunately, it is very difficult for prospective buyers to get hold of the best of the best from Austria. The coveted "trophies" are usually reserved in advance and quickly sold out. Due to the export success of many Austrian wines, the allotted quantities for the Austrian market have become even smaller. If you still want to buy and enjoy such rarities, you will find them at eBay auctions.

eBay as a wine trader?

Despite all the warnings about buying wine on eBay, the online auction house for rare and sought-after wines is a serious player in terms of the quantity of wines sold and the prices achieved. This is because eBay does not sell the wines itself but offers a sales platform for traders and private persons worldwide. The more serious the seller seems due to his ratings, the higher the bids will be. It is not uncommon that Austrian top wines are auctioned more expensive than big names like Mouton- or Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Masseto, Sassicaia and how they are all called. A bottle of Mariental 1986 - certainly Austria's rarest cult wine internationally - costs just 180 Austrian shillings (about 13 euro!) at its launch. On eBay, this wine is rarely auctioned for less than 300 euro. The Mystique by J. Pöckl was already the most expensive wine in Austria in 1994 with a price of ATS 550.00. A lot of money for a wine, but only (?) 39.90 Euro according to today's currency! The table below clearly shows that the most sought-after wines from Austria have their price.
