About 800 German white wines from 2024 and 200 reds from 2023 have been tasted by Marcus Hofschuster and Kim Schreiber. Their first impression: Get ready for surprises! Which ones are the best, read here.

What can the current vintages 2024 for white wine and 2023 for reds offer? We are still in the middle of the tastings. Many wineries have not yet presented their current wines to us, and some are just now releasing earlier vintages to the market. The top wines of the vintage are still missing – not least because the Great Growths of the VDP wineries can only be presented at the beginning of September.

However, after evaluating around 1,000 wines so far, some characteristics of the vintage are already clearly emerging. The best 2024 white wines are fresh, juicy, and precise. There may have been more concentrated and complex vintages, but few whose wines provide so much drinking pleasure from the start. Ideally, they combine expression and terroir character with finesse and lightness. It is astonishing and, not least, reassuring how well many producers can now cope with the changed climatic conditions.

We feel similarly about the red wines from 2023. We hardly expected that after the great 2022s, the level could be maintained the following year. The surprise is even greater after the first approximately 200 wines: It can! An outstanding vintage seems to be emerging in the Ahr, but we have already received some stunningly good Pinot Noirs from Württemberg and Baden. Defining characteristics are again elegance, precision, and freshness, but the best examples also possess concentration and depth. Here we can still expect some surprises.

We have tasted around 800 white wines from 2024 and 200 red wines from 2023 so far, plus 30 rosés from 2024. We present the best here. Links to all wines and their producers can be found again at the end of the rankings. Details about the weather conditions and their effects on the most important grape varieties will be available in our extensive vintage reports next spring.
