When it bangs on New Year's Eve, it has nothing to do with explosives for us; we celebrate without firecrackers and rockets. Here, only the corks pop.

Okay, we admit it: We don't need a special occasion to open a special bottle of sparkling wine. Good champagne, winemaker sparkling wine, spumante, cava, or corpinnat is always appropriate: for Sunday breakfast or with white sausage - after all, we live in Bavaria - for a snack, for an aperitif, with sushi, with schnitzel as well as with scallops, lobster, caviar, or sole, with crabs and salad, at the grand opera and with pop music, if it must be. We drink it with our Christmas cookies (where higher dosage makes sense), with steak, with liver in any form anyway (since we just talked about dosage), often enough with the whole menu, in front of the TV and before meals, before any kind of altar (let everyone make an altar of whatever suits them, to uncork a decent bottle of sparkling in front of it) - and anyway on weekends and all 5 days before. After all, they also deserve to be endured with dignity.

But of course, at Christmas and New Year's Eve everyone does it, that could provoke the individualist in us to rebellion. But please; once a year, the others can also be right. No reason for self-mortification.

Speaking of self-mortification; if it can't be helped, alcohol-free sparkling is also fine. In no form does wine without alcohol, including its derivatives, work better!

We have tasted around 250 sparkling wines this year. We present the best here in several categories: sorted by sugar, by color, by origin, and by budget. Overlaps are sometimes unavoidable, please forgive us. Links to all wines and their producers are listed at the end of each list.
