Terra Xpress
Fascination Sea

It's a sensation in the Baltic Sea. Following a tip from a fisherman, amateur divers venture to an unknown wreck at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. In the depths, however, they do not discover the treasures they had hoped for, but only ancient bottles filled with what seems to have been undrinkable champagne for a long time. But then it turns out that each bottle is worth more than 10,000 euros. Surprisingly, the noble drop from the depths has held up superbly and still tingles deliciously. "Terra Xpress" tests whether storing champagne and wine under water can even be better than the traditional methods used so far in cellars.

Well-known in the country
On the Nahe Wine Route
People and traces along a holiday route

The Naheweinstraße was launched in 1971. It had role models such as the German Wine Route, which had already been founded in the Third Reich, and the Baden Wine Route, which was established in 1954. They were and are all projects to promote viticulture and tourism. But in contrast to the German Wine Route, the Nahe Wine Route did not really catch on. After euphoric beginnings, the project fizzled out. But the Nahe region is now becoming better known among wine lovers. Viticulture benefits from a mild climate and extremely diverse soils, and the landscape offers spectacular panoramas. Spa towns like Bad Kreuznach and Bad Sobernheim have long attracted recreation-seekers to the area, who explore the charming landscapes of the Naheland from the healing springs.

Via Aquitania in France

Along with language, the Romans also introduced wine to Gaul. The wine history of the Corbières region began when the first vines were planted by the Romans in 125 BC. The Via Aquitania led through the vineyards of Château Coulon and Château Veredus today. Even then, wine was transported between Narbonne and Toulouse in large amphorae. Even today, shards of earthen wine jugs can be seen. The programme is also available online from 04/02 to 11/02 on the ARTE internet portal.

"A convent is a great talent shed. You discover things about yourself that you had no idea about before." This is what Sister Thekla says, who first learned the profession of winemaker at the St. Hildegard convent in Rüdesheim - because it was needed. The monastery owns extensive vineyards where grapes are harvested for the monastery's own white and red wine. Sister Thekla also walks through the vineyard with groups of visitors. Viticulture, like the monastery shop, the goldsmiths or the ceramics workshops, is a separate branch of the economy that finances monastic life in Rüdesheim.

The Valais, Switzerland's sunniest region, shows its most beautiful side. Before Stalden, the steepest section of the Glacier Express begins with 125 per mille. A little less per mille is served here in slanted glasses on the train - Heidawein. The glasses are slanted so that they stand up straight on the table during a steep mountain journey. The wine, by the way, comes from the area. Above the track, near Visperterminen, is the highest vineyard north of the main Alpine ridge at an altitude of 1,150 metres. The wine tastes fruity and has it all. Up to 14 percent alcohol is not uncommon. Heida wine is therefore also called "leg-breaker".

Winegrowers, wines and volcanoes

Three different regions comprise the wine country of Styria: "Paradise on the Border", "Styrian Tuscany" and "Rebenland" are the names of the attempts to find apt descriptions. A must for every visitor to the Styrian hill country is a trip along the South Styrian Wine Road. Ernst A. Grandits guides you through Styria along the oldest and most famous of all Styrian wine roads and introduces wine varieties and growing areas. Bizarre cliffs characterise the landscape of south-eastern Styria. They originate from extinct volcanoes, and this is a blessing for the wines. This, reinforced by the cool climate, gives them their unmistakable spiciness and aroma. Western Styria is considered the most idiosyncratic wine-growing region in Austria, where the most idiosyncratic wine also thrives. The 430 hectares of vineyards are predominantly planted with the grape variety "Blauer Wildbacher". This variety is exclusively used for Schilcher. In Graz and Vienna, the former farmer's drink experienced a remarkable career to become a cult wine.

alpha-retro: Through the ages the wine flows (1961)

This documentary from 1961 is about wine, its cultivation and refinement, vine breeding and the cultural history of wine. This cultural history is shown during a visit to the "Wine Museum" in the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer. The film ends with a short introduction to the "science" of the right wine glass. Why does the same wine taste full-bodied from one glass and flat from another? In this documentary from 1961, author and presenter Karl Grösch invites the viewer to first join him on the trail of a winemaker's working year. Work in the vineyard begins right after the snow melts in February. And because this film comes from long ago, when farmers fertilise their vineyards, they still bring the manure there with ox teams. Karl Grösch notes that the manure for this is not cheap nowadays and is hard to come by.

service: travel Bordeaux

It has been rumoured in France for a long time: Bordeaux is a serious competitor for Paris. It produced the philosophers Montaigne and Montesquieu, its architecture is a prime example of classicism, and Bordeaux is the world capital of wine. A visit to the wine museum "Cité du Vin" is a must. "service: reisen" explores the city the French way with a restored 2CV lady in Charleston look. Its owner, Martine Marcheras, guides you through the city on the Garonne in a charming way. Only an hour's drive away, always heading southwest, is the Cap Ferret peninsula with its colourful settlements of oyster farmers. If you like to slurp oysters, this is the place to be. Only here is paté served with them. Away from the coast, we head into the heart of the Bordelais to Saint Émilion. Here, too, wine is the elixir of life.
