The Elbe is a transport and shipping route, offers a tourist destination with the Elbe Cycle Route, and creates ideal grazing land for livestock thanks to the landscape and climatic conditions such as the Elbe meadows. The same applies to the slopes for winegrowing. The unique climatic conditions on the Elbe allow the vines to ripen well. The siblings Katharina and Matthias Schuh, who both learned to walk on steep slopes, have been managing their parents' vineyard in Sörnewitz-Coswig (Saxony) for several years.

The Barn
How handicraft rescues old treasures

Dagmar Rückrich-Menger from Eich runs a vineyard that has been in the family for a long time. She brings a writing desk to the barn, which is very rare nowadays and which stands like a symbol for the family's wine history. It was and is a working tool, because her father, who died in the 1970s, used this desk to write down every bottle that was bottled in the Rückrich house. Things have changed in the meantime, but the desk has remained. Only the condition leaves something to be desired. Christian Ludwig of "Möbel vom Gutshof" from Ober-Hilbesheim takes care of the piece and is very enthusiastic, even if there are places that cause him concern: one foot, for example, is riddled with woodworm holes. But he wouldn't be a professional if he didn't find the optimal solution for this heartfelt piece.

Delicious in the country
Christine Huff - Winemaker in Rheinhessen

The countrywomen set out for their last dinner. The finale takes place at the home of winemaker Christine Huff. The 29-year-old runs a vineyard with her family near Mainz. There is a lot to do in the steep vineyards on the Rhine. The studied winemaker focuses on independent wines and appreciates the variety that the small winery offers her. Her husband Jeremy keeps a flock of sheep, because he is a sheep farmer and comes from New Zealand. After a long stay in Germany, he wanted to go back, but because his father has vineyards of his own, he decided to spend a few weeks on a vineyard in Rheinhessen. That's where he met Christine - and stayed. They got married two years ago. Jogging is their common morning sport. Christine's passion, painting, however, often has to take a back seat since she has been working responsibly at her parents' winery. The creative young winemaker has a knack for decorating and cooks with dedication. She serves hearty dishes as starters in her menu, because the Rhine-Hessian has a soft spot for regional cuisine. For the main course, she serves venison fillet with a spirited herb salsa.

Directly above it, steep vineyards are cultivated with the help of rack railways. We watch the winegrower at work and ride a "rollercoaster". After Traben-Trarbach there is another small branch line for commuters and tourists. There you can also visit the largest collection of Buddha figures in Europe.
