The winegrower king
A world collapses

After many years abroad and a failed marriage, Thomas Stickler (Harald Krassnitzer), the son of a Rust winegrower, returns to his Austrian homeland and takes over the family business after his father's death. Not to the liking of everyone involved, because Thomas has been away too long to now be accepted as belonging again. He finds his greatest adversary in the great vintner and mayor Georg Plattner (Stefan Fleming), who is married to Thomas' sister Andrea (Katharina Stemberger). For the latter had reckoned with the inheritance himself. But Thomas is determined to start a new life as a vintner. By his side he has not only his adolescent daughter Anna (Britta Hammelstein), who decides to live with her father, but also his mother Hermine (Christine Ostermayer), the cellar master Claudia (Susanne Michel) and grand vintner Gottfried Schnell (Wolfgang Hübsch), an old family friend.

Legendary - The Wachau

The Wachau lies 80 kilometres west of Vienna on both sides of the Danube between the towns of Melk and Krems. Famous monasteries alternate with picturesque villages. Along the paths and stairways through the vineyards, castles and castle ruins tell of times long past. Thanks to the mild climate, grapes and apricots ripen here. This was already noticed by the Romans, who once brought the first vines here. The beautiful landscape is both a World Cultural Heritage Site and a World Natural Heritage Site. In Mautern, Axel Bulthaupt meets a cooking winemaker whose vineyard dates back to Roman times. Saint Severin is said to have retired here to meditate in the vineyards. Her apricot dumplings convince not only Axel Bulthaupt but also an international jury, which chose her "Wachau cookbook" as the best local cookbook in the world.

Sunny South Tyrol - Where the South Begins

The holiday region of South Tyrol is nestled between the Eastern Alps and the Dolomites, where rugged mountains meet vineyards, the sun shines 300 days a year and where Tyrolean down-to-earthness and Italian lightness shake hands. Crime writer Lenz Koppelstädter shows South Tyrol's capital Bolzano. He reveals where to find the best dumplings and the finest aperitivo in his home town. In the past, the Ritten was the summer residence for wealthy Bolzano families. On the high plateau, about a thousand metres above the city, pleasant temperatures prevail in high summer. By bike, the picturesque wine villages along the South Tyrolean Wine Road are explored all the way to Lake Kaltern. And if you're on the road by bike, you can also taste a wine or two with a clear conscience.

The Winegrower King
Matchmaking

It's autumn in Rust: school starts for Anna and Thomas' first grape harvest is coming up. Hermine invites Andrea to a family dinner and hopes that Georg will come too. Thomas has the new cellar equipment delivered, everything has to be installed under great time pressure before the upcoming grape harvest. However, the family dinner lovingly cooked by Hermine takes place without Georg. He does not manage to sit down amicably at the table with Thomas. Paul and Thomas, however, quickly find each other in the cellar of the winery - Paul shows his father his wine treasures and opens a century wine. Andrea continues to badger her husband, and finally Georg asks Paul to reconcile before the tasting begins. Paul accepts the apology, even though it becomes clear that nothing will ever be the same again. Claudia's hope of impressing Thomas at the wine festival in a new outfit is not fulfilled: the notary Dr. Thaler and she come to the event in the same dress.

Harvest time

The grape harvest is upon us and Thomas' new cellar is ready for use. In his function as mayor of Rust, Georg cannot help but congratulate his opponent Thomas. He notices that the wine press has not yet arrived. Thomas tells Georg that it will be delivered the same afternoon. When Georg leaves the cellar, he immediately calls the winery's supplier Ressler and pressures him to give him the press for Thomas for several times the price. Thomas wants to start harvesting the next day - but according to Ressler, the press can now be delivered in 14 days at the earliest. Thomas rejects Georg's smug offer to press 50 percent of the harvest in his cellar. When Paul comes by Georg's house, he finds that he has received a new press. Thomas suspects a scam and actually manages to prove that Georg has bought the press from under his nose. He threatens his brother-in-law with a public scandal, which could cost him his post as mayor. Georg is almost bursting with anger, but his wife Andrea is even more so when she realises what a nonsensical action Georg has thrown so much money away on. Georg finally leaves the press to Thomas.

The Southwest from Above - The Palatinate

The forest, the Rhine and the wine - these three things not only characterise the central landscapes of the Palatinate, but also reveal a lot about its soul. There is often talk of the "German Tuscany". Where the mountains of the Palatinate Forest slowly disappear, the first vineyards appear on the edge of the Haard. Along the German Wine Route, one winegrowing village follows the next, bordered by the wine metropolises of Landau, Neustadt and Bad Dürkheim. Here, too, the Cineflex camera plays to its strengths and shows towns and landscapes in a new perspective in the different seasons.

The first wine is ready for bottling. Thomas has also found an interested wine merchant who wants to buy a few thousand bottles. Hermine's conversion at the inn meets with the approval of the conservationist. He advises her to apply to the state and the mayor for building subsidies. This gives Hermine satisfaction. She throws herself back into her work on the inn and suffers an attack of weakness. There is great horror after Paul's accident. He is in a coma. The Moselle

Steep slopes and magnificent views, the Moselle is one of the most breathtaking rivers in Germany. But working on its banks has never been easy. Nevertheless, young people are again choosing to live along the Moselle - in France, Luxembourg and Germany. Rebecca Materne and Janina Schmitt belong to a new generation of winemakers who have rediscovered the steep slopes of the terraced Moselle. Rebecca Materne comes from the Ruhr area, Janina Schmitt from Hesse. In 2012, the friends leased a vineyard in Winningen near Koblenz - and grow Riesling on the slopes with a gradient of over 50 degrees - without using machines, without pesticides. Their life is characterised by the unpredictability of the weather and hard work: tying the vines in spring, bottling in ssummer grape harvest in autumn. It would not be possible without the help of family, friends and family. If both want to make a living from winegrowing one day, their business still has to grow. But "Materne & Schmitt" are optimistic.

In the past, mainly wood and grain were transported here, but now they are even thinking about resuming freight traffic. My delicious garden
With Beate Vollmayer

Landwoman Beate Vollmayer's vineyard is located in Singen am Hohentwiel. In addition to 15 hectares of vines, the farm also includes a large vegetable garden. Here Beate Vollmayer grows everything that she and her family like to eat. In order to also have enough acreage for berries, Beate is planting a new snack garden with chokeberry, blueberry, gooseberry, raspberry, mayberry and currant plants. This is her self-chosen project in the garden competition - and also has to do with her work as a winemaker: she wants to compare the aromas of her wine with the aromas of different berries. Beate Vollmayer also cultivates sweet corn. She received the seeds directly from the SWR expert in spring - along with the task of growing the healthiest possible plants with magnificent cobs. In autumn, Beate Vollmayer will also transform her own harvest into a two-course garden menu.

Gernstl on the Danube
From Lower Bavaria to the Wachau Valley

Franz X. Gernstl and his two buddies, cameraman HP Fischer and soundman Stefan Ravasz, are on a discovery tour along the Danube. With 2,857 kilometres, the Danube is the second longest river in Europe. From its source in the Black Forest, it flows through ten countries - and finally flows into the Black Sea. The starting point of the three-part expedition is Donaueschingen, the journey ends in the last episode near Vienna. 30 kilometres downstream from the Danube, in the middle of the Wachau, lies the Fischer winery. This is the home of "Huchen-Peppi". Josef Fischer takes care of the survival of the huchen, which have become rare. For his own sake, because he likes to eat the imposing "Danube salmon". The retired winegrower is a contented man. This is also due to his handsome additional pension of 365 bottles of wine per year, which he receives from his son, but also because of the place where he lives: "The Danube is a wonderful, a mighty river. I am happy every day to be at home here."

Craftsmanship!
How to build a barrel

Cooper, cooper or cooper - it is a craft that only a few still master. Ralf Mattern from Deidesheim in the Palatinate is one of them. In his business he builds barrels up to a size of 20,000 litres - and they are in demand all over the world. The wood for the staves comes largely from the Palatinate forest. The oak boards have to be stored in the yard for several years in wind and weather until the tannins have been washed out. Only then does the cooper shape them so that they can later be joined together to form a perfect barrel. It takes Ralf Mattern and his journeymen around 40 hours of work, a lot of muscle power and experience. Machines play a secondary role, because the craft has hardly changed in the past two thousand years. The wood is bent over the fire and sealed with reeds and steam. This creates a unique aroma that is transferred from the wood to the wine and refines it.

The "Signum" is an oasis of tranquillity and the Aeolian way of life - which is evident not least in the dishes Michele conjures up in his kitchen.
