The best wines from this spectacular appellation in the very north of the region never fail to surprise. The very name "roasted slope" suggests particularly powerful or heated wines, and climate change with its ever hotter and drier summers reinforces such expectations. And yet the producers here do indeed succeed in producing concentrated and deep, sometimes even massive, but at the same time always surprisingly fine and elegant wines with polish, precision and freshness.

We have already reported here on the different styles and soil types, the grape varieties (only Syrah and a little Viognier are permitted) and the legendary ability of good Côte Rôtie to develop.

The demand for the wines of the appellation is high despite partly exorbitant prices, many of them are only available on the secondary market anymore - with corresponding mark-ups.

We tasted mainly wines that are still available on the market. There are 22 in total, all of which we can present here. Detailed tasting notes and the producer portraits can be found here.

In Focus: Côte-Rôtie
