In one of Italy's most sought-after holiday regions - on Lake Garda - lies the Ottella winery. A prime example of regional consciousness, which shows itself in proud wines that carry Italy's exhilarating attitude to life.

Two brothers, one region, one common passion: that is the excellent equation behind the Ottella winery in the Lugana region of origin. For it is Francesco and Michele Montresor who now run the 95-hectare family winery in the fourth generation - and at the same time have made it a pioneer of the cultivation area, which extends across the provinces of Verona and Brescia. In fact, the two brothers have been instrumental in making the Lake Garda wine region enjoy such an excellent reputation today. "All our decisions are about achieving excellence, to be true ambassadors of this special wine region," explains Francesco Montresor as the one owner of Ottella. And it is a special cosmos in which the vineyards on the southern shore of the popular lake are located: The former advance of the ice-age glaciers into the valley formed the amphitheatre of moraine hills here and thus also the Lugana basin, where the composition of the clay soils varies between the DOC municipalities of Sirmione, Desenzano, Lonato, Pozzolengo and Peschiera del Garda: mainly limestone, rich in minerals, interspersed with more sand in the hill areas.

Art meets wine

"It is an incredible pleasure to make a product in this area whose quality is rooted in the deep Italian culture of beauty and goodness," says Michele Montresor, as the other owner responsible for export markets. It is precisely these values that Ottella takes up. On the one hand, in the philosophy of winemaking, which is characterised by the highest ethical expression of action, respect for people and the landscape that surrounds them. This makes it clear at the same time that organic viticulture is a basic requirement for the winegrowing family. But the philosophy is also evident in the aesthetic expression of beauty, which is even reflected in the wine cellar: an original space that not only architecturally embraces the modern way of thinking about making wine, but also the connection between art and wine that is firmly rooted in the family. Here, in this unique setting, the wines mature in different containers: Steel, wood, cement and, in the third vintage, now also in terracotta amphorae. Because preserving values and traditions is just as much a part of Ottella as visions for the future.

Wines that inspire

The basis for everything is the greatest possible respect and the successful interpretation of the relationship between the vineyard and its environment. The main focus in the grape variety list is on the regional parade grape variety Trebbiano di Lugana (Turbiana). But Corvina Veronese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Incrocio Manzoni and Chardonnay are also grown. After the gentle harvest, the sustainability of the process and the attention to detail come to the fore in the cellar. Thease attributes give the wines their finishing touches and express their stylistic identity: "Wine must first and foremost inspire, stimulating our senses and memory." This is exactly what Ottella succeeds in doing.
